World Artisan Day was created in 2021 by NOVICA, the fair-trade online marketplace founded in association with National Geographic. The initiative was launched with the support of UNICEF to recognise the contribution of artisans around the world and encourage people to support handmade products and traditional craftsmanship.

The date, 18 April, was chosen to shine a spotlight on the importance of preserving artisan skills in a world increasingly dominated by mass production and automation.

Since its creation, World Artisan Day has been marked through art fairs, craft workshops, local markets, design exhibitions, and social media campaigns around the world. The hashtag #WorldArtisanDay is widely used to share handmade creations and highlight artisan stories.
